Ever since Hannah arrived on the scene, things have been different between Brennan and Booth. Hannah represents a door that was once slightly ajar and is now slammed shut. There is no way our favorite will-they-won’t-they couple are getting together as long as the intrepid reporter is around, as evidenced by events in Season 6, Episode 9, "The Doctor in the Photo." As Booth was quick to point out, Hannah "is not a consolation prize." Meaning that Booth didn't just hook up with Hannah because he couldn't have Brennan. (That's his story, at least.)
Still, fans are wondering just how far this Booth and Hannah thing will go. *Spoiler* The producers have teased about a proposal, and it’s not crazy to imagine Booth getting down on one knee to ask Hannah to marry him. *End spoiler*
In a recent interview, Bones executive producer Stephen Nathan said Hannah is really meant to do a couple things:
- Show a positive friendship between two strong females. (What’s Angela: chopped liver?)
- Give Brennan the mental push she needed to decide how she felt about Booth (check).
- Help writers and fans examine Booth and Brennan's relationship. (As in, just how serious is this thing?)
Let’s break down each of Hannah’s raisons d'être:
Brennan and Hannah, BFFs?
While Brennan and Hannah are never going to be extremely close, they do have a sincere respect for each other. It's nice to see a female friendship that isn't all catty and backstabbing in nature. Still, one thing that bugged some viewers was the odd hospital scene in Season 6, Episode 5, “The Bones That Weren’t” where Hannah insists that Brennan (who is nice enough to visit her) surrender her sunglasses as a “get-well-soon” gift. Though Tempe flashes a disbelieving smile, she forks the shades over willingly. Nathan explains that Bones saved Hannah’s life, “So Brennan really was the person who was in control and is sort of the alpha female in that relationship. And I guess that was a way for Hannah to get a little of herself back, a little bit of her strength back. And Brennan graciously — and with a big open heart — let her do that.” And we thought it was just Hannah’s pain meds talking.
Why Hannah? Why Now?
Booth might have instantly fallen for Hannah, but the timing could not have been worse for Brennan. She was just starting to think that perhaps she made a mistake in rebuffing Booth, and before she can say, "D’oh!," here Booth pops up with Hannah. Producers looked at Hannah as a way "for Brennan to grow." Let's face it, Brennan could take years mulling something over in that enormous brain of hers, so Hannah has forced Brennan to look at Booth seriously as a potential love interest now rather than later. There is nothing that makes a gal want a guy as seeing him happily in love… with someone else.
When Will Hannah Go Bye-Bye?
The big question, the only question, is if Hannah is around for good. Although things are serious between her and Booth now, she has yet to discover some of Booth’s secrets, like his sniper past and gambling problem — oh, and the fact that he told Brennan he loved her just a year ago (you know, little things). These aren’t exactly first-date topics of conversation, but perhaps he should have shared such details before asking Hannah to move in with him.
Will Booth’s past have an impact on the couple’s future? Nathan offers a huge hint by saying, "We know what her profession is. We know that she has been on the move her whole professional life. She comes and goes." Does that sound like someone that is sticking around forever?
Even if Hannah beats a hasty retreat, that doesn’t mean she’ll be gone for good. Nathan warns, “She can always return, no matter what happens with her relationship with Booth and Brennan." Interpret that as you will, Bones fans! Hannah has a lot of frequent flyer miles, and she’s not afraid to use them.
