Bones Season 8 might not have even started yet, but that hasn’t stopped us from wondering about the potential for Season 9. There have already been rumors that season be Bones’ last — rumors perpetuated by mischievous tweets from series star David Boreanaz’ (Booth) himself.
So what is the deal: are we getting a Season 9 or not? Unfortunately, it’s just too early to tell. Networks don’t usually announce their official pickups or cancellations until later in the season.
However, during a conference call on September 5, Bones executive producer Stephen Nathan offered a bit of encouraging news. Stephen revealed that both David and co-star Emily Deschanel (Brennan) “are currently in negotiations with the studio through at least Season 9.”
In fact, the contracts could potentially extend past Season 9. But because those negotiations are only between the actors and the studio, Stephen doesn’t know how many seasons the contract would cover.
Yet, since nothing has been signed yet, it’s possible that the series could continue without either of its stars. However, neither Stephen nor Bones creator Hart Hanson are worried about the outcome. “We’re pretty confident they will come to an agreement,” Stephen says.
Even David’s ominous tweets about Season 8 “quite possibly” being Bones’ last don’t have him worried. “David is a mischievous guy,” Hart says. “He loves lobbying hand grenades out. I think he really gets a kick out of [...] people hollering on Twitter. It’s all part of the game to him. But I don’t think there’s any serious angst or bile behind it.”
Stephen continues, “The undercurrent of all of David’s tweets, or anything he does online or in the press, is that he loves doing the show.”
And what do you know? The show loves him, too. “He’s better than ever in the show. I think he wants to come back as much as we want him back, as much as we want it to work out. It doesn’t seem to be a real issue.”
