Born in Los Angeles into a Hollywood family, Emily Deschanel was pretty much genetically engineered to be a star, as was her equally famous sister Zooey. Emily's father, Caleb Deschanel, is an award-winning cinematographer — he directed Bones Season 2, Episode 20: "The Glowing Bones in the Old Stone House" — while her mother is Twin Peaks actress Mary Jo Deschanel (née Weir). With her father's job taking the family all over the world, Emily spent various parts of her childhood in France, South Africa, Canada, and Yugoslavia.
Upon viewing John Robbins's documentary Diet for a New America, a film from the son of the founder of Baskin-Robbins that examines the links between health, animal rights, and the environment, Emily promptly became a vegetarian and transitioned to veganism two years later. A staunch animal rights activist, Emily supports organizations such as PETA and the Humane Society. She doesn't wear leather, preferring "vegan" shoes made by Stella McCartney.
Before landing the role of Dr. Temprance Brennan on Bones, Emily appeared in Glory Road, Rose Red, Cold Mountain, and starred in Boogeyman. Her very first movie was It Could Happen to You, in which she played a paint-throwing fur activist. Hopefully it wasn't a case of art imitating life.
On Saturday, September 25, 2010, Emily married her boyfriend of three years, David Hornsby. Now that Emily's personal life is happily settled, let's see if some of that magic will rub off on Booth and Brennan.
