Brandy Tells Oprah Why She Lied About Being Married in 2002 (VIDEO)
Brandy shocked everyone back in 2002 when the (at the time) 23-year-old actress/singer revealed she was expecting her first child with record producer Robert “Big Bert” Smith — and said that she'd married him in secret. However, a year after the birth of their daughter, Sy’rai, the couple split, and the following year, Big Bert revealed that the couple were never married at all.
Brandy would later say that, while they didn't elope, her relationship with Big Bert was a “spiritual union,” but almost 12 years later, the singer admitted that she lied about being married because she thought being an unwed mom would tarnish her career.
“At that time, being pregnant out of wedlock was not a trend,” Brandy revealed to Oprah on a recent episode of Where Are They Now? “It was not something people praised. It was a sin,” she added. “And I felt like I could not be honest about that.”
Becoming physically emotional, Brandy went on to say,“I felt the pressure of having to be perfect, and I was scared. I thought that everything I worked hard for was threatened. I felt like having a child out of wedlock would ruin my career, everything I built.”
Brandy finally apologized to Oprah for lying about it during their 2002 interview regarding her pregnancy and marriage.
“I’m really sorry for that,” Brandy said at the time, adding jokingly, "You just don’t lie to Oprah, OK!?"
