BREAKING: Glee Renewed for Two More Seasons — 5 and 6!
We can breathe a sigh of relief, gleeks. Not only will Glee return for Season 5 this fall, but Fox has actually renewed our favorite high school musical comedy-drama for Season 6, as well, according to an official press release from the network.
It’s a bold move, considering that Glee’s ratings have fallen 20% in the last year. Though the second season premiere attracted more than 12 million viewers, only 7.4 million tuned in for this season’s premiere, and viewership has continued to fall off, with occasional boosts, such as the ratings for Glee’s powerful school shooting episode.
However, we choose to be optimists that Glee will make a big comeback next season. Last month, Ryan Murphy hinted that he and Fox bigwigs were discussing the future direction of the show. ““I actually have a meeting [Thursday] at 11 where I have to pitch out not only the end of this year but the next year,” Ryan told TV Guide at PaleyFest.
Fox must have loved what he said, since they renewed the show for two more seasons. “Glee debuted as the first and only successful musical comedy series on television, and more than four years later, it continues to defy genres, break new ground and have a significant impact on popular culture,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.
“Week in and week out, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, Dante DiLoreto and the entire Glee team deliver a series that not only delights and surprises fans, but also inspires them to talk about, share, debate and engage with the show,” he continued. “I’m absolutely thrilled to have them on board for another two seasons.”
