Brooke Burke-Charvet on Her New Fitness Line and Shaping Up for Summer — Exclusive

Former Dancing With the Stars co-host and star Brooke Burke-Charvet is a busy woman. The actress, TV personality, writer, and devoted mom recently expanded her set of skills to include "fitness fashion designer" with her news fitness apparel line, Caelum.

This new line — which is available in stores at Nordstrom and online at and on — blends fashion with fitness for women with busy, active, on-the-go lifestyles. Sounds like exactly the kind of thing Brooke knows a lot about! Brooke will be celebrating the launch this Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Nordstrom at The Grove in LA. If you're in the area and want to meet Brooke yourself, you can get more info here.

In preparation for the launch Wetpaint Entertainment chatted with Brooke about this exciting new chapter in her life, her fave summer styles, and what else we can expect from her post-DWTS life.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What inspired you to start an apparel line?

Brooke Burke: I feel like fitness is fashion right now, and it's a huge part of my life. There were plenty of pieces missing in my personal collection. I see women working out more, working out harder, working out stronger, and wearing their workout gear all day long, and I'm not seeing a lot of really fun pieces out there. So this line is for me and every other woman who wants to get fit and work out. There are a lot of layering pieces that can go from the gym to the street into your meetings, and let you make a fashion statement with your fitness gear.

Obviously there are some other brands that try to blend fitness and fashion. What makes Caelum unique?

I think the price point is going to set it apart from many of the others. Every single piece is under $100 without compromising at all on quality. We've also got pieces that you can layer, and ones with beautiful strappy backs that are meant to be worn with other types of clothes, like, you know, off the shoulder sweatshirts and some of the more difficult pieces in your wardrobe where you can't find the perfect bra and you want something sexy underneath. So it's performance, but it also has a fashion flair to it.

It's inspired by everything that's trending in fashion right now, so it's very hip, yet still having the performance quality and the price point.

You mentioned what's trending in fashion. What are your favorite trends as we head into summer?

There is definitely a more relaxed fad. I hardly ever wear black anymore. I love pops of color, I love bright patterns. What I see right now that I don't think I've ever seen before are these crazy vibrant splashes of color in leggings. We have our core black pieces, but it's so much fun. I still love good one pieces and maxi dresses. It's simple, simple and easy right now to dress for summer.

Mixing with pattern is kind of a new thing right now, with florals and stripes and polkadots and prints and thing that we probably never would have done years ago. That's now kind of fun and funky.

You're all about staying in shape while somehow also having an awesome career and being a mom. What's your biggest tip for busy women looking to get into shape for summer?

I think staying in shape year round is key. Everyone kind of panics when swimsuit season starts and it's summer. I think women have to design a workout that fits their lifestyle so that it's achievable. I teach a class, I do it with my kids, I do it with girlfriends. It keeps me honest, it keeps me on schedule.

I think people need to mix up their workouts. I'm a teacher, I do pilates, I do SoulCycle — everyone has something to offer. So you have to do a workout that's fun, that you enjoy. And I think that when you schedule it with friends, you make that commitment, it keeps you honest. So I think scheduling is really important.

I've said this a gazillion times, but making yourself a priority is allowed as a woman. We give so much as mothers, we give so much to our careers, we put ourselves last on the totem pole. I think it's important for women to make themselves a priority.

Great advice. Making working out a part of your schedule definitely seems key!

Yeah! You write it down. We don't miss the other important appointments in our lives. Why is fitness not a priority?

This launch is super exciting. Are there any other projects your fans can look forward to coming up?

I have a recurring role on Melissa & Joey which will air in June, and it looks like there's a possibility of my character coming back, so I'm excited about that. I also blog and write, and I'm the CEO of ModernMom, so that keeps me really busy.

As far as summer goes, I'm not sure exactly what the next chapter looks like for me. I'm excited and open to feeling free right after Dancing With the Stars, and doing something new. Surprisingly I'm loving being a fitness fashion designer and working with this great team. I'm enjoying everything from pulling swatches and having an idea and then seeing it come to life, and being really hands on. I didn't just lend my name to this line. We really collaborated and worked together. I just put my heart and soul into this, and I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy fitness fashion. I love it!

Well it makes perfect sense, since you're so involved in fitness and you're fashionable!

Thank you! I've also built a dance studio, which is finally done, in my new home. I'm excited about the Booty Burn classes that I've been teaching, and what it's become, this great community of women in Malibu that I've been teaching for the past two years. It started out as a passion project of mine, but it's become the ground that let this community grow that we share and we inspire each other and it's been just a really, really fun project. I'm not quite sure yet where that's going to take me, but it's fun.
