Brooklyn Nine-Nine Finale Scoop: Jake and Amy “Have Quite a Journey Ahead of Them” — Exclusive

Are Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) the new Jim and Pam? The detectives are taking their shippable chemistry to the ballroom for a glitzy undercover assignment on tonight’s season finale of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Melissa Fumero promises that fans won’t be disappointed.

“Jake and Amy’s relationship goes to a new place in the finale,” Melissa told Wetpaint Entertainment. “There are some great moments between them — both as really great partners and also as a potential pairing. There are these little will-they-won’t-they moments, and I would say that people who are fans of the whole Jake and Amy storyline will be happy with the finale, but I don’t know if they’ll be satisfied. They have quite a journey ahead of them.”

But Santiago has evolved beyond just a love interest for Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s hapless protagonist — she can stand on her own two feet. Her evolution from the precinct’s uptight know-it-all to a sincere, yet adorably awkward detective has been one of the highlights of the season.

“Amy’s biggest thing is that she always thinks she’s 100 percent dialed in and when it comes to work, that’s usually true, but when it comes to life and people and social situations, she’s not always dialed in,” Melissa told us. “She just tries so hard, and she always has a plan, but they don’t always come to fruition.”

Of course, that usually happens when she’s around Jake. Tonight’s finale will see Amy trying her hand at something she’s — gasp! — not good at (dancing), and Jake along for the ride.

“[Andy Samberg and I] have a lot of fun when we get to do Jake and Amy scenes because there are so many different dynamics to their relationship, especially as they’re getting to know each other on a personal level. There’s a lot to play around with, and we work really hard on those Jake and Amy scenes. There’s a moment in the ‘The Bet’ episode, on the roof, where we both crack up laughing and that was actually because I accidentally got a peanut in my mouth when I wasn’t supposed to. We kept going with the scene, and it made it into the episode. I know that if I have a full day of filming with Andy Samberg, I’m going to be coming home quite tired.”

Do you want to see Jake tell Amy how he feels in the finale? Or do you think he should wait? Sound off in the comments!
