Bruno Mars to Perform at Super Bowl 2014 Halftime Show (UPDATE: THIS ’90s Band Will Play, Too!)

UPDATE (1/11/2014): There will be some scar tissue at the 2014 Super Bowl and we're not just talking about potential injuries on the field. The NFL has confirmed that iconic rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform with Bruno Mars during this year's Super Bowl halftime show!

"Bruno Mars has invited the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him" onstage at the halftime show, according to the NFL. The big game airs on February 2 on Fox and will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The Chili Peppers have a slightly older fanbase than Bruno Mars, thanks to their slew of hits over the past two decades, including "Under the Bridge," "Dani California," and "Scar Tissue."

We wonder if this new addition is a sign that producers were worried about fans not being too excited to see Bruno Mars. Do you think adding RHCP is a good idea, or would you rather just see Bruno on his own?

UPDATE (9/8/2013): It's official! Bruno Mars will soon perform on the most-watched TV program of the year, as the NFL has confirmed that the singer will be doing the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2014. Pass the wings!

However, since the game will be played outdoors in New Jersey in February, Bruno might want to get his fedora lined with down feathers. That would be fedora-ble. And yes, we really think that a combination of the words "fedora" and "adorable" could catch on. Help us spread it, people!

Original story: When you think of Bruno Mars, you think more of catching grenades than catching touchdown passes. But perhaps that's about to change.

The Associated Press is reporting that the "Grenade" singer has been tapped to perform the halftime show at the next Super Bowl. The NFL's championship game is scheduled to played in February 2014 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Translation: It's not going to be warm out, so Bruno may want to bring his mittens.

We think Bruno is a great choice for the gig, considering his wide array of pop hits, including "Locked Out of Heaven," "Just the Way You Are," and the current jam "Treasure." That said, we don't envy him for having to come only one year after the barnburner of a halftime performance by Beyonce. When a performer knocks out the stadium's power, you know she's awesome.

And this seems like it would be a huge career boost for Bruno, since he's a big-time performer but isn't quite at the legendary status of previous halftime acts like Madonna and Prince. But we like the choice of Bruno because, although he's contemporary, he's fairly wholesome, so we don't expect him to have any wardrobe malfunctions.

Indeed, an NFL spokesperson would not yet confirm that Bruno has been selected, but the spokesperson did say that Janet Jackson and Miley Cyrus definitely wouldn't be chosen. Ouch! Looks like Bruno better not be planning to do any twerking while he's onstage.

So what do you think of the choice? Do you think Bruno is a treasure, or do you plan to channel-surf over to the Puppy Bowl while he's performing?
