Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Did Ali Make Up Her Flashback?

Pretty Little Liars played some major mind games in Season 5, Episode 10 (“A Dark Ali”). First, Alison (Sasha Pieterse) flashed back to the time she was robbed and stabbed by Cyrus while living on the rough in an abandoned building. Then Pretty Little Liars revealed that Ali hired Cyrus to confess to her “kidnapping,” implying that the two parted on amicable — not stabby — terms. What gives? Did Ali make that entire flashback?!

Yes, it never happened. Pretty Little Liars has, to our knowledge, never tricked us with a false flashback before, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible, especially given the unique aesthetic look Ali’s flashback in last night’s episode had. Other flashbacks on this show operate by showing us an entire color-saturated scene. Ali’s flashback was superimposed in snippets on top of the scene she was viewing in the present tense. At the time, we thought this meant she was suffering from PTSD, but after knowing that Ali was the one who hired Cyrus, we think it may have signaled a fiction rather than a memory. Ali is such a good liar she can even make herself see the lie.

No, she and Cyrus have a complicated relationship. Let’s face it: Ali isn’t always the best of friends. She can be pretty backstabby, which generally sets a precedent in her relationships. Cyrus may have stolen Ali’s stuff and stabbed her, but that doesn’t mean these two didn’t work things out! Bygones, amirite? Alternatively, if they didn’t work things out, that doesn’t mean Ali couldn’t still hire Cyrus for a job. She may not trust him, but maybe she trusts that he will do anything for the right price.

No, there are two Alis. The reason we were so convinced of Ali’s story of runaway robbings and stabbings is that she looked truly traumatized in that abandoned building as she was remembering what happened there. Those weren’t the eyes of a liar. They were the eyes of a scared girl. And that scar had to come from somewhere, right? After last night’s episode, we’re even more convinced of the possibility that there are two Alis — the real Alison and her twin sister. If this is the case, the Ali in the abandoned building could have been telling the truth while the other Ali could have been picking Cyrus up at the police station and paying him off.

Do you think the flashback was real? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
