Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Did Toby Kill The Girl in Ali’s Grave?

There’s a lot that doesn’t add up about Toby’s (Keegan Allen) recent visit to London on Pretty Little Liars. Why would he cross the Atlantic to tell Melissa that her sister had relapsed when he could have just picked up the phone? And why isn’t he back yet? This all adds up to one terrifying question: Did Toby kill the girl in Ali’s grave?

Yes. That’s what Melissa whispered in her father’s ear.

A transatlantic flight is neither inexpensive nor a typical spur-of-the-moment decision, which mean Toby must have had a good reason for heading to London. In the Season 4 finale, Melissa claims Toby went to London to tell her about Spencer’s relapse with Adderall addiction, but that couldn’t really have been his reason, right? We think Toby went to London because he was scared and needed someone’s help. We think he may have been the one to kill the girl in Ali’s grave — perhaps, because she had something to do with his mother’s death.

It seems super strange that it was Melissa (or Wren) he went to for help, but there’s still much we don’t know about his past, and Spencer wasn’t exactly in a place to help when Toby left. Could Toby have met Wren at Radley when his mother was staying there? It’s certainly never been hinted at. If anything, the two have been quasi-enemies with a simmering competition for Spencer’s affections, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Another possibility is that Toby became friends with Melissa when both she and he were Ali’s enemies. The night of Ali’s almost-death, Toby thanked her for blackmailing Jenna into stopping her sexual harassment. Did he mean that, or was he trying to get the videos back from her for Melissa? We’re not sure what to believe anymore. We just know that, whatever Melissa whispered into her father’s ear concerning the murder of the girl in Ali’s grave, it concerned someone in or close to the Hastings family. Someone they would be willing to protect. We think Toby is on that short list of people.

No. The show just needed a reason for Keegan’s departure

It’s entirely possibly that we’re reading too much into this. Pretty Little Liars needed a reason for Toby’s absence during an extremely difficult time in Spencer’s life because Keegan, the actor behind the role, was not available for filming. He was in NYC for months making his Off Broadway debut. What’s a show to do but make up a faraway trip for its resident lovelorn carpenter? Tobes can only go on so many carpentry trips out of town, especially when his girlfriend is in such dire straits. We still think a trip to the UK just to tell Spencer’s sister she had relapsed is a bit of an extreme excuse, but we suppose it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility, especially if Toby thought Melissa might not come back without a personal plea. Toby would do anything for Spencer, even brave turbulence and Melissa’s wrath if he thought it would help the girl he loves.
