The Vampire Diaries Burning Question: Does Damon Drink Vampire Blood?

On the most recent episode of The Vampire Diaries, it was revealed that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is a former Augustine vamp. This means 60 years ago tests were conducted on him in an attempt to create a vampire that feeds only on other vampires rather than humans. (Trippy!) Does this mean Damon craves the taste of vampire blood? Because that would be a huge twist! Let's speculate.

So, obviously, Damon is a lover of the human blood. It is probably his favorite type of blood. But, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy a vamp blood snack every once-in-a-while or, perhaps, did in the past. The experiments done by the Augustine Society are undertaken with the purpose of creating a vampire who feeds on other vampires, which means that there is a good chance Damon’s tenure as an Augustine lab rat in the 1950s may have left him with some lingering side effects. When Damon shows up in Mystic Falls in Season 1, he is in a pretty bad place. He has obviously been through a lot and hasn’t seen his baby brother for a long while is this because he purposefully stayed away while learning how to wean himself off of vamp blood and back onto a human blood diet? Because that would be kind of sweet in a skewed, TVD sort of way.

On the other hand, it seems like Dr. Wes and the past mad scientists hadn’t successfully completed many of their experiments. If they had fifty years ago when Damon was hanging in their cages, then we’d probably see a lot more vamp-feeding vamps populating the contemporary world of TVD. Though Damon may have been a lab rat for the Augustine Society back in the day, it seems unlikely that they successfully found a way to turn an already-existing vamp onto vamp blood.
