In a sneak peek for the next episode (Season 5, Episode 3: “Original Sin”), Elena awakes from yet another dream about Stefan. And not just a regular, run-of-the-mill kind of dream in which she dreamt Stefan adopted a family of chickens and opened a car dealership specializing in egg-shaped cars or something. The kind of dream in which she was experiencing what her ex-boyfriend was experiencing. These two obviously still have some sort of lasting and intense connection.
Last week, Elena broke down when thinking about Stefan’s suffering, about how much she needed to find him and rescue him. Sure, she was pretty emotional as she had been compelled by Silas to kill Damon, but that doesn’t mean those emotions weren’t genuine. We were hesitant to believe that a show structured around a love triangle had really changed its ways, and now we have the proof: Elena is still in love with Stefan.
On the other hand, whose bed was she in when she awoke from the aforementioned dream? Damon’s, aka her boyfriend, aka the person she spent seemingly all of last season trying to convince she genuinely and truly loved. In last week’s episode, Elena promises Damon that once they find Stefan, she will still love Damon, and we kind of believe her. It would have been (relatively) easy to stay with Stefan. It was the status quo. Instead, Elena uprooted her entire life, broke Stefan’s heart, and upset many of her loved ones in choosing to be with Damon. She wouldn’t have done that unless she was 100 percent sure that Damon was The One.
She loves them both...
But we learned from Stefan’s trusty BFF Lexi in the Season 4 finale that people, and especially vampires, have many Ones. We think that might be true of Elena. It’s hard to imagine she will she ever be completely over either of the Salvatore brothers. They are gorgeous and completely in love with her. More than that, whenever she tries to move on with one of them, something crazy like this current “Stefan is suffering” storyline happens (i.e. Stefan was willing to let Delena be happy together, but now he needs their help.) They’re getting pulled back together, just like they always are. Unless one of these three moves to some remote island, we doubt this love triangle will end.
