The Originals Burning Question: How Did Marcel Escape the Fire?

In the latest episode of The Originals, we finally learned the details of how and why the Mikaelsons fled New Orleans in 1919. Cornered by their father, Mikael, they barely escaped his macabre opera with their lives, thinking they lost Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) died in the opera house fire. How did Marcel escape the vengeful blaze?

Mikael let him go

Prior to appearing on stage, bound as one of Klaus’ loved ones Mikael “cast” in the bloody opera, Mikael approached Marcel with a deal: tell me where Klaus is, and I will spare Rebekah’s life and leave you the city. We never heard the details of the deal, nor if Marcel accepted, but it certainly seems like he may have. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he have gone after the Mikaelsons? We think Marcel may have agreed to Mikael’s terms, told him where Klaus would be that night, and played along with the plan. Once the Mikaelson siblings fled the opera house, Mikael would have then released Marcel. He would be the type to honor this barbaric deal while causing his own children such grief and misery.

Elijah saved him

Another possibility is that Elijah saved Marcel from the blaze. This seems less likely given that he doesn’t seem to have a particular connection to Marcel, nor has he brought it up before, but we know he split up with Rebekah and Klaus as they fled the city. Might he have doubled back to check the opera house, and in the process, saved Marcel? This would be quite the secret, given that he hasn’t mentioned it for the past 100 years.

It doesn’t matter

Will The Originals ever answer this question? Because it feels a lot like the Enzo situation on The Vampire Diaries. Like Marcel, Enzo was thought to have perished in a fire decades ago, only to have turned up alive and well. So far, the show hasn’t really addressed how he escaped from a vervain-laced cage in the middle of a house full of dead people who wouldn’t have been able to lend a hand. Perhaps, this is something we’re just supposed to assume vampire can do? But, if it were that easy, why would the Mikaelsons have simply assumed Marcel had died without checking. This entire situation seems fishy…We certainly hope there’s more to this story.
