Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Is Maya Really Dead?
We’d pretty much closed the file on Pretty Little Liars’ Maya St. Germain (Bianca Lawson). Her body was found in the Season 2 finale, and though it has taken Emily (and us) a long time to get over her untimely death, we thought we had moved on. Then, PLL showrunner Marlene King tweeted this clue-ridden photo that suggests that Maya may not be as dead as we had previously thought.
Recently Marlene shared a snapshot of her computer, a pyramid of soda cans, and a Pretty Little Liars DVD, along with the line, “Ali asked you to wait for it. Now it's time to write it.” But what really piqued our interest about the pic was the pen nestled amongst Marlene’s computer keyboard - white with red lettering that spells, “Emily & Maya.” Is this Marlene’s subtle way of telling us that there is more to the Emaya romance? Given that Bianca recently told MaximoTV about a possible return to PLL: “You never know. Maybe. Maybe. People that are maybe dead or are dead have come back.”
But they found Maya’s body! (You may argue.) Well, if we’ve learned anything on this show, it’s that corpses apparently count for nothing. Take Ali, for instance, who was allegedly murdered and buried in the DiLaurentis backyard. But if we believe Mrs. Grunwald, then Ali didn’t die, even though the Rosewood authorities supposedly found her corpse. Which is what we call precedent. If someone (or a few someones) successfully faked Ali’s death, then who’s to say that they couldn’t have done the same thing with Maya?
The Ali/Maya connection
Maya moved into Ali’s house after her death, which means (in theory) that they didn’t know one another before that. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have met post-Ali’s “death.” In Season 4, we find out that Red Coat has been living in the crawl space of the DiLaurentis house (Ali’s parents bought the house back from Maya’s family after Maya’s “death”). What if Red Coat (aka Ali) has been using the house as a hideout for a long time, i.e. she spent time there when Maya was living in the house. Could these two have become friends? Or, at the very least, could Ali have seen Maya was in trouble and saved the girl in the same way she saved herself - by faking her death?
