There’s something that’s always bothered us about the Pretty Little Liars universe: why didn’t Byron Montgomery (Chad Lowe) and Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) already know one another before the events of PLL? After all, Ezra was a student at Hollis in the same department Byron in which teaches. Here are five reasons we think Byron and Ezra may have met before…
Hollis is a small college. Hollis is a small college in a small town in Pennsylvania. The odds of Ezra, a humanities major, having a class with Byron are pretty high. It seems odd that Ezra wouldn’t have mentioned this ever, but perhaps there is something in his college history that he doesn’t want Byron to remember. Now that we know Ezra is “A,” we’re desperate to know what he was up to in college. One doesn’t just randomly become a cyber stalker, right?
Ezra has changed his name since college. We always thought it was kind of strange that Ezra changed his name from “Fitzgerald” to “Fitz.” We went with it because Ezra’s explanation that he wanted to separate himself from his crazy family made some sense, but now we’re wondering if there wasn’t more to it. Perhaps, he had a class with Byron and didn’t want Aria’s dad to remember him from that time? After all, it’s not like Ezra couldn’t have separated himself from his family without the name change — Fitzgerald isn’t exactly an uncommon name.
“A” knew about the affair. Byron started the affair with Meredith, his student, while Ezra was still at Hollis. We’re guessing this is how Ezra as “A” found out about it. We think he may have been the one who sent the letter to Ella detailing the affair (though, we’re still kind of hazy on what Mona did as “A” and what Ezra did as “A”). This also possibly explains Ezra’s reluctance for Byron to remember him as a student. If Ezra and Meredith were in the same class, it might throw suspicion on Ezra as “A” when it comes to that letter.
Aria bumps into Ezra outside of Byron’s office in flashback. Because of the Aria flashback scene we get in Season 2, Episode 13 (“The First Secret”), we know that Ezra sometimes hung out outside of Byron’s office. A flustered Aria literally runs into Ezra when exiting her father’s office. This implies Ezra had a class in that building, and makes it even more likely he was in Byron’s class. Heck, he may have even been waiting for Byron’s office hours.
Ezra is nervous for the parent/teacher conference. Another sign that Ezra and Byron knew one another before the present-day events of PLL comes from Ezra’s nervousness to first meet Aria’s father in Season 1 during a parent-teacher conference. At the time, it was explained away by the Ezria relationship — Ezra was nervous to meet Byron because he was dating his high school daughter. Fair enough. Now that we know Ezra is “A,” though, we’re suspicious of every one of his actions and presumed motivations. Was Ezra nervous because of his romantic involvement with Aria or because of his previous collegiate involvement with Byron?
Do you think Byron was Ezra’s teacher at Hollis? How might this tie into Ezra’s “A” status? Sound off in the comments below!
