We still have a lot of unanswered questions about Ian and his involvement with Alison the night of her disappearance. From the look of these promo photos, we think we may be getting some of those questions answered in the Season 4 finale. What happened between Ali and Ian the night she disappeared? We have some theories.
She Broke Up With Him
Whatever Alison had with Ian, we think it may had ended the night of her disappearance — whether because she was planning to disappear sometime soon or because of his involvement with Spencer. Not so long before this, Ali had seen the two of them kiss, and she certainly seemed jealous given that way she went after Spencer, bullying her into saying she would tell Melissa (who was currently dating Ian) about the one-time liplock. Did Ali pull the plug on whatever it was she and Ian have? And, if so, how did Ian react? We know he had a temper...
She Told Him She Was Pregnant
We know from CeCe, that Ali was worried she was pregnant with Beach Hottie’s child the summer before she disappeared. We’re still not sure who Beach Hottie is, but could it have been Ian? Though Alison later wrote in her diary that it was just a pregnancy scare, we’re not sure we believe her words. Her long-term disappearance is awfully suspicious. Could she have stayed away to have a baby without anyone knowing? And did she tell Ian that night that she was pregnant? If so, how did he react? Presumably not well enough to warrant her asking him for help when she needed it.
He Broke Up With Her
Whatever spurred Alison to insist that Spencer tell Melissa about her kiss with Ian, we think it may have come from this conversation with Ian. We think she was angry enough with Ian to want to cause him pain — even if she hurt Spencer in accomplishing that goal. What could have caused this level of outrage? Rejection. Something Alison was not familiar with having to deal with, and actively eschewed by manipulating the people in her life to need her — whether they wanted to or not. Did Ian break up with her that night at the kissing rock?
He Tried to Kill Her
Ian was once the Liars’ prime suspect in Alison’s alleged murder because of the tape that saw him strangling Ali — then, they saw the rest of the tape, in which Ali gets up and leaves. Ian may not have strangled Alison, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t later hit her over the head with a shovel — perhaps, when meeting up with Spencer later that night. We think there’s a chance Spencer arranged to meet Ian to inform him that she planned to tell Melissa about their kiss the next morning, and that Ian reacted accordingly: by knocking Ali over the head. We know that Ian had no qualms with killing if the situation “called for it.” He tried to kill Spencer in the Season 1 finale, and almost succeeded — if not for the hoodied figure that pushed him off the bell tower before he finished the job. Was that person Alison? Did she finally get her revenge on Ian by saving Spencer?
