The pain of Ezra’s monumental betrayal eventually drove Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) out of town in last night’s emotionally-turbulent episode of Pretty Little Liars. But where in the Liar heading? And what will she do once she gets there?
As we can see in this sneak peek for Season 4, Episode 22 (“Cover For Me”), Aria has driven all the way to upstate New York to spend a few days touring the Syracuse University campus where her dad has been spending a lot of time lately doing professor-y things. In the sneak peek, Aria tells Emily that it is “prospective student week.” Best timing ever, or did Aria know where she was going when she stormed past Emily and out into the Rosewood night?
Aria elaborates about what she’s up to over the phone to Emily: “Four days of campus tours, classroom visits, and a bunch of father-daughter bonding time,” she tells her friend, adding that she’s “trying not to think about any of it” and — don’t worry — she’s not alone. She doesn’t give Em the deets on her companion, a fellow prospie Riley (Nick Roux). He’s a hot musician type who already seems to have an easy camaraderie with our girl Aria in this opening scene. They tease one another about their presumably late night the previous night, then makes plans to ditch the schedule campus tour in lieu of pancakes. (Guest star after our own hearts.)
The synopsis tells us that both Spencer and Aria will “lean on new men in their lives” to work through their respective pain, and that definitely seems the case with Aria. In fact, she seems to be doing a heck of a lot more than just leaning. In this promo for the next three episodes, it looks like Aria and Riley are hooking up in a hotel room. Will this relationship be something that continues after Aria returns from Syracuse, or will it be a short, passionate love affair that burns brightly before fading quickly into the black abyss of non-endgame PLL relationships?
Whatever happens with Riley, Aria can’t stay away from Rosewood forever. Prospective student week will end, and she will have to return to her mess of her life. But, for now, we’re glad Aria has found a temporary oasis in upstate New York. Who knew prospective students weeks could be so restorative?
