Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Why Did Melissa Come Back to Rosewood?

The Season 4 finale of Pretty Little Liars was a regular parade of long-neglected supporting characters. Amongst the much-missed faces to pop up in the season-ender: Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto), who allegedly came back to town when she heard about Spencer’s relapse into study drug addiction an explanation we find pretty flimsy. Why did Melissa really come back to Rosewood?

To Kill Mrs. DiLaurentis

Melissa returns to Rosewood and only hours later, Mrs. DiLaurentis is killed? It seems a little too obviously risky for someone who has two lawyer parents, but we can’t help but admit that the timing is mighty suspicious. Did Melissa return to her hometown to keep Mrs. D. quiet (forever)? We’d hate to think that she was capable of such things, but she’s made it clear before that she will do anything to protect herself and even Spencer. Was killing Mrs. D. one of those things?

To See CeCe

As mentioned, Melissa was only one of many characters who returned to Rosewood in the Season 4 finale after a long absence. CeCe Drake was also back, apprehended by the police as a suspect in the Wilden murder after months on the run. Did Melissa return because she heard that CeCe was back in town? Was she involved in Wilden’s murder? Does CeCe have dirt on Melissa that she is willing to spill to the police? If so, it would explain Melissa’s hurried return she has to get to CeCe before the girl can talk.

To Confess to Killing the Girl in Ali’s Grave

The Hastings parentals were totally convinced that Spencer was the one to kill the girl in Ali’s grave, but we’re pretty sure they’re wrong. So does Melissa. She was presumably whispering the identity of the true killer in her father’s ear in the Season 4 finale. Was Melissa the one to kill the as-of-yet unidentified girl? Did she come back to confess or, more accurately, to make sure she had the legal representation to ensure that she got away with it? Or is she protecting someone else?

To See Spencer

We’re not totally cynical. Maybe Melissa did return to Rosewood because she was worried about Spencer’s relapse. Even though Spencer might not believe Melissa when she says that everything she’s done was to protect her little sister, we kind of do. Even if some of Melissa’s actions have been misguided, we want to assume the best of her for Spencer’s sake.
