Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Why Does Spencer’s Dad Want to Shut Down Radley?

In the Pretty Little Liars winter premiere, Peter Hastings (Nolan North) took some serious interest in Radley Sanitarium more specifically, in shutting it down. What reasons does Spencer’s father have for going to such extremes? We speculate below.

To protect Jason

When asked by Spencer what interest he had in closing Radley, Mr. Hastings cited protecting his family. Our thoughts immediately jumped to his illegitimate child, Jason, as he and Spencer had been discussing him earlier in the ep. Is this just a coincidence, or is there a reason Jason wouldn’t want information about Radley to come to light? We know that Spencer’s half-brother has a history with drug and alcohol. The night Ali disappeared, he was so drunk, he couldn’t remember if he had been the one to allegedly kill her. If Radley has a wing for addiction and alcoholism, it’s not so preposterous to assume Jason might have spent some time there.

To protect Melissa

Another Hastings offspring that could have a connection to Radley is Melissa, Spencer’s older sister. The seemingly perfect Melissa has never spoken of Radley, but she does seem to know a lot about the “A” game and Ali’s disappearance. As everything leads back to Radley, could she have a history there? This possibility becomes particularly intriguing given that her ex-fiance and current houseguest in London, Dr. Wren, now works there. Did he take a post at the mental health facility per Melissa’s request? She can be very persuasive, and if she wanted a man on the inside to purge her connection, he would be the perfect candidate.

To keep Ali’s twin a secret

Of course, the secret Hastings wants to hide might not have anything to do with one of his children, but another DiLaurentis: Ali’s twin sister. Many signs point to Alison having had a twin and, in the books, said twin lived at Radley before escaping and switching places with her sister. If Mrs. DiLaurentis confided in Mr. Hastings during their affair, perhaps he feels a responsibility to protect the family. If we’re getting really speculative, it’s possible that Ali and her sister are Mr. Hastings’ children, as well as Jason. After all, we’re not sure how long the affair between the Rosewood parents went on.

Why do you think Mr. Hastings is so eager to shut Radley down? Share your theories in the comments below!
