The Vampire Diaries Burning Question: Will Katherine Find a Way to Save Nadia?

The Petrovas are in a pickle! At the end of last week’s Vampire Diaries episode, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) discovered that her daughter, Nadia (Olga Fonda), had been bitten by a hybrid. This spells a slow and agonizing death for a vampire, unless they can get a sip of Klaus’ blood. As he’s currently planning a slow and agonizing death for his enemies on The Originals, we doubt that’s going to happen. Will Katherine find a way to save Nadia?

Yes, Katherine Pierce can do anything

When Katherine sets her mind to it, she can do anything. As what she generally wants more than anything is to keep herself alive, this is evidenced by the fact that she’s still kicking after 500 years of existence. This is especially impressive given that Klaus was hunting her for most of that time. It’s hard to imagine that Katherine won’t be able to accomplish a miracle for Nadia, given all of the tricks up her sleeve.

Katherine also has considerable collateral: Elena’s body. This means she can conceivable get all of Elena’s loved ones to help. This is kind of what we’re afraid of: that Katherine will sacrifice herself for her daughter, trading Elena’s body for their help in saving Nadia. And we really don’t want Katherine to die. But, given Caroline’s, er, connection with Klaus, we wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t have a vile of Klaus’ blood stashed for such an occasion. It’s just the sort of convenient MacGyver plot twist that this show would go for — and we would narratively believe.

No, Katherine will choose herself

On the other hand, are we over-estimating Katherine’s love for daughter? She’s made a lot of talk about how much she loves her. When Nadia first found her, Katherine confessed to returning to Bulgaria 500 years ago to find Nadia. She claims she looked everywhere, but couldn’t find her and had since thought her dead. When Katherine was on her deathbed, Nadia offered to act as a passenger vessel, but Katherine refused, saying she didn’t want that for her daughter. We know now that was a ruse, part of the plan to get Katherine into Elena’s body. Was there any truth in it? Would Katherine really choose her daughter over herself? We’d like to think so, but we can never be sure with Katherine.
