The Matt and Caroline relationship has always felt a bit unfinished to us. The childhood friends broke up in Season 2 not because they fell out of love with one another, but because Matt couldn’t handle the reality that Caroline was a vampire -- his life was already too complex without a vampire for a girlfriend. Now, we think Matt may have warmed to the idea. After all, he spent the summer gallivanting around Europe with Rebekah. With the news that Caroline will “have her hands busy with someone else very soon,” we wonder if the lucky man won’t be Matt. As arguably the two most moral characters on a show filled with self-obsessed killers — said with love, TVD— these two have always made a lot of sense together to us.
On the other hand, these two characters are very different from the people they were when they were together. We still think they love one another, but we’re not sure how much they have in common. Caroline had trouble maintaining a relationship with Tyler because — in addition to many reasons (i.e. Tyler being kind of a jerk) — they were on very different life paths. This could also be said about Caroline and Matt. While the former has just started a new phase of her life as a college student at Whitmore, the latter is still living in Mystic Falls, trying to deal with his recent possession by an Eastern European names Gregor. Would they have anything to even talk about?
Are we the only ones who have felt a little sad about the amount of screen time these two have been getting — especially token human Matt Donovan?! There was all this talk of how Matt was going to be a central character in Season 5 with his very own storyline. All we got was episodes of the poor guy filming himself sleeping and not-understanding Czech. Meanwhile, Caroline’s Season 5 arc has been woefully inconsistent and seemingly tacked on to the storylines of more central characters (most recently, Stefan and Katherine’s). We don’t care if these two get back together or not, as long as they get some meatier storylines to sink their teeth into.
Do you think these two crazy kids will get back together? Do you want them to? Sound off in the comments below!
