Kandi Burruss Was Prepared to Call Off Wedding to Todd Tucker if He Didn’t Sign Prenup

This past Sunday’s episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi’s Wedding may have pulled in a record 2.6 million viewers, but it was quite the stressful hour for engaged lovebirds Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker. The couple waited until two days before their wedding to go over the very complicated prenup, and when Todd wouldn’t sign the document right off the bat Kandi’s lawyers advised her to call everything off. Somewhere, Mama Joyce was doing cartwheels.

Kandi took part in a recent interview with Bravotv.com, and they asked her straight up if she was really prepared to call off her wedding if Todd refused to sign the prenup. “I was. I got so many tweets saying I was horrible to consider it, but let me explain,” she said. “Todd did not get his attorney until two days before the wedding. We did start late, it was only a week and a half before the wedding when my attorneys started drafting the prenup, but my attorneys wanted Todd's attorney's information at that point so they could work through it all together. That did not happen, but Todd and I had said we were on the same page, so I didn't think it was a problem. The only thing at the end that I thought could be taken out was the part about what were to happen if I died; I understood why Todd and his attorney would have an issue with that. But the things that his attorney was flagging were mostly financial. That was when I had to say, ‘Hold on, why is your attorney talking to me as if you're my employee? You're not my employee, everything we do together we split equally.’”

In Kandi’s mind she felt like she was just being a smart and savvy businesswoman by attempting to protect her assets, but she admits it didn’t always come across that way on camera. “Watching it play out on the show, I felt that I looked like a villain, but at the end of the day, it's hard to plan a prenup,” she reasoned. “It's hard to plan for the worst-case scenario with this person when you're planning to spend the rest of your life with them. So no matter what you're going to look like the bad guy because when you're in love, it seems harsh. But Lord forbid we fall out next year, everybody would think I was stupid for not doing it.”

Kandi certainly has a point there. The prenup and the way in which it was handled may have seemed cold, but as a successful businesswoman it’s her job and her job alone to protect all of her hard-earned cash. On the flip side, the prenup is also meant to safeguard Todd and his assets so Kandi can’t claim them as her own if the couple divorces.

The RHoA star is happy she has the prenup in place, but she has no plans for this marriage to fail. “You've got to keep in mind that the things in the prenup are only necessary if we were to fall apart. And Lord forbid, I don't want it to fall apart, I want our marriage to last forever,” she says. “But I have to be realistic. Both of my parents have had multiple marriages. I don't want to put them on blast, but between the two of them, it's nine marriages, so I have to be realistic.”

Do the conditions of Kandi and Todd’s prenup still seem harsh, or does everything make more sense now? Weigh in below!

The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi’s Wedding finale airs July 6 at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo.
