You Can Now Take a Class in Dothraki! (VIDEO)

First we heard about the Game of Thrones class being taught at Virginia University and while it sounds fun, it doesn’t really have a ton of applications for everyday life. But a class in Dothraki? Now that could come in handy the next time some horse lord wants to rip out your throat for hanging out with the lamb people.

Living Language, in association with HBO, is producing a course in the fictional language, which soon could rival Klingon as the number one fake language of nerds everywhere. There are ample opportunities to take the course, which consists of around 200 words, including an app, an online course, or a good old-fashioned book and CD combo.

Linguist David J. Peterson created much of the language for GoT, based on some words in the show’s source material, A Song of Ice and Fire, and to this point there are about 3,800 words in Dothraki, meaning this course just scratches the surface of the language.

Peterson describes what you’ll learn in the course, and one real world application for it. “Of course, there isn’t vocabulary in the language for subway trains and cell phones and airliners," Peterson says. “But if you want to go to a restaurant and demand as much sausage as they have, you’ll be able to do that by the end of the course.” Sounds like a language fit for Ron Swanson. Just remember at the end of your meal, there is no Dothraki word for “thank you.”
