Carrie Ann Inaba: Dancing With the Stars Switch Up Will Be “Quite the Psychological Thriller”

They can call it The Great Switch Up Mystery of Dancing With the Stars Season 18, Week 4! Who knows if DWTS will ever try this particular twist again, but it’s coming to a TV near you this Monday, April 7 on ABC.

Right at this very moment, the top nine couples of Season 18 have been re-packaged, with all the celebs dancing with new pros. They aren’t telling us the partnerships yet — they want everyone to watch the show live to see what happens. The couples will be revealed throughout the evening, which is certainly one way to build anticipation.

The judges are as in-the-dark as the rest of us, but Carrie Ann Inaba shared her thoughts on the Week 4 twist in her Parade blog. “Today is the day they tell the couples who their new partner is going to be for the upcoming week!” Carrie Ann wrote in her April 1 post. “Talk about a ‘SWITCH UP.’ After last night’s incredible performances I almost don’t want to see them switch, but at the same time, how very interesting and what an amazing experiment it is to do this. It will be quite the psychological thriller if you ask me. I won’t know until Monday as well…and I’m chomping at the bit.”

Thankfully, this thriller won’t end with two bodies on the floor — no one is being eliminated this Monday; the scores from Week 3’s Most Memorable performances will be combined with the scores from Switch Up Week 4, and one of the original couples will have to go home on Week 5. At least, that’s how we think it will work based on what Tom Bergeron said this week. But if a celeb has a particularly off week with their “new” pro this coming Monday, that new pro may take some of the blame for the celeb and original pro leaving on Week 5.

But let’s try to think positively — this “switch” is just for one week, and maybe it will reinforce the original couples’ respect and love for each other, while giving them a fresh perspective on other teaching and dance styles. It may not be bad at all. Besides, Julianne Hough will be back, so you know it’s going to be a great night. Smile and we’ll get through it!

DWTS Season 18 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
