Carrie Underwood on Her Role in The Sound of Music: “I Know I’m Not Julie”

Carrie Underwood’s live Sound of Music special isn’t airing until next month, but she’s already receiving criticism for taking on the iconic role.

“I get hate tweets and stuff, like, ‘you’re not Julie Andrews!’” Carrie told Entertainment Weekly (according to People) in a recent interview.

But Carrie totally understand it just comes with the territory for breathing new life into a such a classic film with such a loyal following — especially when most fans don’t think an update is necessary.

“I know I’m not Julie,” the country singer admitted. “Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was … I know my place.”

Not to worry, Carrie — Julie Andrews totally has your back.

“Fifty years later, it’s time somebody had another crack at it,” Julie told Zap2it earlier this year. “I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me. I think it’s great that it’s being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting for Carrie.”

If Julie gives her blessing, we think it’s safe for her fans to support Carrie’s twist on the musical, too. We can’t wait to see the reworked version on December 5!
