Sad news today involving legendary radio star Casey Kasem: After battling Parkinson's disease since 2007, Casey has been removed from life support as he requested in an advance healthcare directive Casey filed in 2011, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Casey and his family have been in the news lately for the feud between his children and Jean Kasem, their stepmother and Casey’s wife. Jean removed Casey from the Santa Monica facility he’d been living in to Washington state without informing Casey’s kids of their father’s whereabouts. Since Casey’s been located, his daughter, Kerri, has been granted temporary conservatorship.
And as of June 11, Casey’s nutrition and hydration have both been stopped after a judge ruled to uphold his directive — much to the dismay of Jean and her lawyer, Steven Haney.
“We’re really deeply disturbed by the court’s ruling today,” Steve said. “It’s just wrong. Jean Kasem is broken-hearted.”
Meanwhile, Casey’s family has released a much different statement, inviting Jean and Liberty, the daughter she had with Casey, to spend their father’s final days with him.
“For the last 11 days, our father has been surrounded day and night by love and care by his daughters Kerri and Julie, his son Mike, his brother Mouner and sister-in-law Mary, and his dear friend Gonzalo Venecia,” the family’s statement said. “We continue to hope that Jean and Liberty will come join his family during this time.”
We wish the family peace as they say goodbye to someone so special to them — and someone who has changed the face of radio forever.
