Participants in the Ice Bucket Challenge either pour ice water over their heads or donate $100 to The ALS Association — or both! They then nominate friends, who have 24 hours to take the challenge.
(The Grey's Anatomy cast nominated the casts of fellow Shondaland shows Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder.)
The association notes that the increase in donations has been wonderful but that the increased awareness has been "truly invaluable."
"We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease," says Barbara Newhouse, president and CEO of The ALS Association. "We couldn't be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity, and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative."
