When the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation hits theaters, you may notice that Anastasia Steele's mother, Carla, bears a striking resemblance to 43-year-old actress Jennifer Ehle. The English-American thespian has been cast in the part, as The Hollywood Reporter announces.
The film's biggest two parts were filled in September: Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam will play the kinky billionaire Christian Grey opposite The Social Network's Dakota Johnson as the aforementioned inexperienced sexual partner and protege.
Jennifer first rose to fame acting opposite Colin Firth in the beloved 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries. In recent years, she's taken roles in The King's Speech, The Ides of March, Contagion, The Adjustment Bureau, Zero Dark Thirty, and the short-lived NBC drama A Gifted Man. She's also a star of next year's RoboCop reboot.
On stage, Jennifer has won two Tony awards — once for The Real Thing in 2000 and again in 2007 for The Coast of Utopia.
Her career could have taken a dramatically different tack: She was originally cast as Catelyn Stark in Game of Thrones, even filming scenes for the pilot, but backed out of the project for personal reasons. The role then went to Michelle Fairley.
She's also the daughter of British actress Rosemary Harris, i.e. Peter Parker's mom in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films.
Congrats, Jennifer, on landing yet another plum role! (Now get to work perfecting that expression of motherly disapproval.)
