Dance fans, we have some bad news for you. After 14 seasons on Dancing With the Stars, fan-favorite pro Kym Johnson is leaving the dancefloor. The 37-year-old Australian ballroom dancer confirmed to Us Weekly that she’s kickin’ off her dancing shoes for Season 17 and making her way back down under.
"I will be taking the next season off from DWTS USA, so that I may accept an amazing work opportunity back home in Australia. I am excited, nervous, and humbled by this chance and look forward to sharing more about it with you soon," Kym said in a statement to Us. One thing she didn’t say? What this “work opportunity” is, and whether it’s in ballroom dance or in television, or something else entirely.
Last season, she worked with Ingo Rademacher, finishing fifth in the competition. We got news back in January that Kym was going to be starring on The Celebrity Apprentice Australia, and were worried she wouldn’t be back in time for the Season 16 DWTS dates. But after getting fired in the fourth week, she had plenty of time to stretch and hit the floor with her handsome partner.
At the time, she said "I'm doing this [Celebrity Apprentice] because it's nice to be home and I'm thinking about hanging up the dance shoes. I'd love to do other things. I want to be able to go between Australia and the States a little bit more because I really miss my family." So, is this move for good? Not so fast.
While we’ll miss her amazing dance faces, incredible bod (she’s a one-woman ad for the magic of cha cha), and her spangly costumes, Kym says that her departure isn’t forever. "I wish all the dancers and celebrities in season 17 nothing but love and success and hope to see you all back on the dance floor for season 18."
Phew! We’ll keep our fingers crossed that she’ll be back to try for her third mirror ball.
Do you think Kym will be back for another song, or is this goodbye to our favorite blonde ballroomer?
