When L Word star Jennifer Beals shows up on Castle during February sweeps week as sexy CIA agent Sophia Conrad, there’ll be more than one mystery to solve!

We already know that in the upcoming two-parter Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) find themselves at the center of a murder case that may or may not have happened at the hands of a rogue CIA agent, but we didn’t know the investigation — led by Beals’ Conrad — would make Beckett question a lot more than just who the killer is.

Here’s the deal: Beals’ Conrad isn’t just a "smart," "commanding," and "sexy" CIA agent (though she is), she’s also one of Castle’s former lovers. Awkward!

As if that isn’t difficult enough, as you may recall, a female CIA agent plays a rather important role in Richard Castle’s first series of books, and according to Castle creator and exec Andrew Marlowe, the sexy guest star’s unexpected appearance begs one serious question for viewers and Ms. Beckett alike: “Is Beckett Castle's first muse?"

Not so shockingly, once Beckett makes the connection and realizes she likely isn’t the first woman Castle’s placed on a pedestal, it’s going to wreak havoc in her pretty little head. "Beckett has to wrestle with where she thought she stood in Castle's life and where she might really stand in Castle's life," Marlowe says, adding that Beckett will naturally “feel threatened” and “measure” herself up.

As for Castle, we’re gonna go ahead and assume the whole situation will be NBD to him. but Stana Katic (Beckett) says her dogmatic character probably won’t take the revelation so lightly.

"When you find out that the guy has had other muses before you, it's not like, 'Oh, geez, am I muse enough?'" Katic says. "It's more like, 'Some guys have foot fetishes — is this your thing? You just follow women around and tell them they're your muse so that you can get in their pants?' I think that's the confusion there."

Still, Marlowe calls Beckett’s revelation a “touchstone” for the will-they-won’t-they couple, and “certainly brings up stuff in both of our characters about how they're handling the relationship.” Or, um, not handling it.

But the awkwardness will do some good: It will help the duo develop “a sense of what they want, what they're afraid of, and what they hope might happen,” says Marlowe. Can’t argue with that!
