In an unexpected twist of fate, Kate Beckett threw in her towel (er, badge) on Castle’s Season 4 finale.

Sure, Victoria "Sour Pants" Gates had already given her the temporary boot, but in the heat of the moment, Beckett let her cramazing brush with death (which showed her all she truly cares about is partner-in-crime Rick Castle) get all up in her brain — and the precinct’s princess gladly forked over her police badge. No questions.

Still, this is Kate Beckett — classic workaholic and natural-born problem solver — we’re talking about. It wasn’t easy for the lady cop to work her way up in a male-dominated field to become the respected detective she is today. Beckett’s job used to be her pride and joy. Is she really willing to throw away years of hard work just like that?

On the flip side, we know the brunette bombshell initially signed up for the police academy to seek revenge on her mother’s savage killers. Now, she claims to have put that drama behind her, so maybe she truly believes she doesn’t need the job — or vindication — anymore. And with Castle "out" (said in our very best Heidi Klum voice) too, who needs the day-in and day-out danger? She’s got things — BIG THINGS — to lose, now!

Whaddya think, Castle junkies? Was Kate’s resignation a silly fit of passion that she’ll later regret? Will she have to drop to her knees to get the captain who sent her packing to gift her job back?

Or do you think the sassy sleuth (and her new lover, natch) will take a — gasp! — break from crime-fighting in Season 5?
