The Castle evening at PaleyFest 2012 got off to a sultry start. First, the audience packed into the Saban Theater was treated to a live performance by Castle’s Tamala Jones of her song from Season 4, Episode 14, “The Blue Butterfly," followed by a screening of Season 4, Episode 18, “A Dance With Death," which is set in the world of a fictional show not unlike Dancing With the Stars.
But while the episode, which series creator Andrew W. Marlowe called the “last normal episode before the stormy weather hits,” served up some killer moves, the dancing that the attendees and fans at home were most interested in was, of course, the sexually charged tango between Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic).
So will the twosome get it on this season? Stana seems to think it’s time, and knows what she wants: “Kissing. Lots of it,” she told the audience, to the sound of deafening cheers. Her costar, on the other hand, seems pleased with the pace they’re going at.
“I think it’s played out very well," Nathan said. "It’s been tastefully and artfully dealt with — but I don’t think it’s something that can be done forever. Andrew has shared his plan, and it’s deft.”
Andrew Marlowe, who holds the key to their impending relationship, promised it’s on the horizon and he doesn’t believe in the Moonlighting curse.
"There'll come a time when we can't credibly keep these guys apart," he said, much to the crowd’s delight. “And that next evolution in their relationship can be just as fun.”
But that’s not the only thing to look forward to this season: In the two-part sweeps episode this past February, Jennifer Beals' character, Sophia, told Castle that his father was a CIA agent. But was she telling the truth?
“Castle doesn’t know if he can trust Sophia,” says the creator. “It is something we’ll be exploring forward in the series.”
Nathan’s Firefly costar Adam Baldwin is guest-starring this spring as a character named Detective Slaughter. “And that says it all,” quipped Nathan, before adding that Adam’s character would rearrange parts of his face. “My beautiful, beautiful face,” he joked. (Not that we really disagree.)
And, for those who have been patiently waiting, the last few episodes of the season will start to tackle season-long arcs, like Beckett having heard Castle’s declaration that he loves her and Castle’s secrets regarding the murder investigation of Beckett’s mother. “As we get into his last run, those secrets will start to come up,” teases Marlowe. “And we’ll have to deal with the consequences.”
