On Monday night's Season 5 premiere of Castle, we saw Detective Esposito and Detective Ryan back in action together, but it wasn't without some obvious tension.
Esposito, who is currently on temporary suspension from the 12th precinct, is holding a serious grudge against his former partner for what went down in the Season 4 finale. But Ryan doesn't see it the way Espo does — Ryan told Gates the truth about Beckett's plan to track down Cole Maddox to save her life. And it worked.
Nonetheless, it's going to take a while for Esposito to fully understand Ryan's motives, according to Castle star Jon Huertas. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the actor at last week's ALMA awards, where he dished about what's in store for the pair's bromance — plus, details on Castle and Beckett's relationship, and, of course, the status of Esplanie!
Wetpaint Entertainment: Should we expect Ryan and Esposito’s friendship to be instantly patched?
Jon Huertas: No. It's not going to be instant. We have to figure out how to get over that hump, that little speed bump. So I think it's not going to be forever that we're back into our bromance, as they say. But I think it's an interesting way that we come back together, and we fully invest into the friendship again. It's around Episode 3, I think, is where we'll see it.
Is it a case of some sort? A dangerous situation?
It's a case. It's something that happens while working on a case which proves that Ryan always has Esposito's back and vice versa. So it's one of those moments that makes both of them realize, “We've got to put this behind us and move on.” And now, we've got to deal with Beckett and Castle's relationship.
How soon will that spill into work life?
Well, it never really spills over into the work life. Not yet anyway. We're shooting Episode 6 right now. It hasn't spilled over into the work life yet. But Esposito and Ryan eventually do find out. One of us finds out first. I'm not going to say who it is, but then we have to deal with everyone trying to keep it a secret for a little while, yeah.
What are Esposito's feelings about this?
‘Bout time. You've got to let the sexy out. They should have jumped into bed a long time ago. Whether they fall in love and it works out forever, who cares? At least get in bed and get naked.
Speaking of, now that sexy’s been unleashed, what about Lanie and Esposito?
You know what? That is still on the booty call type of thing. It's not a full fledged relationship, but I think we have to pay more attention to Castle and Beckett right now. We don't want to take anything away from that in the audience's eyes. We'll let Castle and Beckett take the spotlight on the relationship front.
Will there be hints of booty calling?
There could be, yeah.
