As if present-day Rick Castle isn’t adorable enough, Nathan Fillion is about to elevate the class factor by about a million come Monday’s fresh new episode. We’ve already heard a little about Castle's entirely 1940s-themed “The Blue Butterfly” from Seamus Dever, (aka Detective Kevin Ryan), but today the man himself filled us in on some key deets.

“In our present-day mystery, there are some events that unfolded in the ‘40s and Castle manages to find this diary written by a private investigator back in the ‘40s,” says Fillion. “As he reads it, we get to see what he imagines, but he places everyone he knows into the parts of thee people back in the ‘40s so we’ll get to see all of our Castle characters portraying different characters.”

It’s been a while since Fillion has been in a period piece — since his days toting a cowboy hat and a laser gun in Firefly — and we’re prepared to be impressed by Castle all dolled up in the signature ‘40s style.

“It’s kind of extreme … everybody looked really sharp. If a look were to come back, I’d say let’s make it ‘40s, cause it was classy.”

No, you’re classy. However, of the slicked back hair he rocks for the episode, Fillion says the look wasn’t so effortless.

“They used some kind of protein-based gel. It looked a lot like axle grease, it was very heavy, and once your hair is set like that, it’s set. Only thing between you and messy hair is a shower.”

He may look good, but don’t expect it to stay that way. Fillion hinted that Castle’s about to get into a bit of an old-fashioned rough and tumble … stay away from the face!

“I’d rather see the hero of my favorite show get beat up than see him win a fight. That’s just my style, I think I can relate a little easier to someone getting their butt kicked … In that nice ‘40s style, our P.I. gets kicked around pretty well.”
