Today is a special day: Castle star Nathan Fillion celebrates his 42nd birthday! We can’t wait to celebrate the Canadian export’s birth by watching our favorite reruns of Castle and breaking out our special edition Firefly trading cards, but before we do, we’ve compiled our top three reasons why we adore Nathan.

1. Nathan Makes Books and Reading Hot!

Not only does Nathan Fillion play Richard Castle — novelist by day, unofficial detective by night — on the hit crime show Castle, but our guy Nathan also co-founded the non-profit organization Kids Need to Read with author PJ Haarsma in 2007. The foundation is devised to provide underfunded schools, libraries, and literacy programs with books to improve child literacy rates and inspire the youth to read!

Nathan’s involvement is no big surprise — both his parents, Bob and Cookie Fillion, are retired English teachers. His dedication for this organization is so deep that for his birthday wish, he asks fans to make a donation to his cause. Nathan hopes to raise $50,000 on his birthday, so if you’d like to share the wealth of knowledge and imagination, feel free to donate here in Nathan’s honor.

2. Nathan Keeps Us in Stitches!

It’s totally true what they say about girls going for guys that make them laugh (and it doesn’t hurt when he’s a stud too!), and we totally love Nathan’s sense of humor. His witty remarks and comedic timing on Castle has us totally hooked and coming back for more. Not to mention, he’s incredibly hilarious in Joss Whedon’s musical bit Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. And if you still don’t believe us, check out this video of Nathan hosting the 2013 Writers Guild Awards!

3. Nathan Makes Science Fiction Sexy!

We have to admit before Nathan Fillion, we weren’t very into the science fiction genre, but  Nathan is quite possibly the only man that can make us become sci-fi fans. With his role as the twisted preacher Caleb on Buffy and his (short-lived albeit memorable) portrayal of Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds on Joss Whedon’s Firefly (and follow-up movie Serenity), we will follow this guy to any sci-fi convention where he will make an appearance.

And obviously we adore Nathan because he’s more smokin’ than Canadian bacon! Happy Birthday Nathan!
