In Castle Season 5, Episode 13: "Recoil," Kate Beckett had to make a choice that would affect her for the rest of her life: Save the man responsible for her mom’s murder or uphold the oath she took to prevent another one from happening (you know, we couldn’t say “protect the innocent,” because he’s anything but that.)

When the death of a young woman ropes villainous Senator Bracken into the plotline, Detective Beckett sees this as her opportunity to take him down. But did homegirl walk under a ladder by accident or jam her stilettos running on sidewalk cracks, and we missed that part? Because as bad luck would have it, Bracken is the target of an assassination attempt and Beckett is tasked with leading the charge. After wavering back and forth, Beckett ultimately saves Bracken from a limo explosion, and he lives to see another day. Question is, did she make the right choice?

Look, we’re all for justice, but let’s be honest. If the hit on Bracken’s life had followed through as planned, all of our problems would be solved. Beckett could spend her time plotting how to say “I love you” to Rick Castle, and not worrying about the creepy politician lurking around the corner, waiting for him to strike. No Bracken also means that Beckett could focus her attention on that minor, little detail of finding Castle’s mystery dad (when are we gonna see more of that?!)

But it’s Beckett we’re talking about here, and if she let Bracken die when she could have done something to prevent it, we might as well make Dr. Burke her new love interest, because she’d be spending quite some time lying on his couch. And as much comforting and justifying of her actions as Castle could offer her, Beckett would always know the truth, and it could be a driving wedge between them. No, thank you.

So, did Beckett make the right choice in saving Senator Bracken? Or should she have pretended not to notice the limo driver with the detonator in his hand and practiced her best “OMG” face? Let us know what you think down below.
