The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Set to Incinerate Box Office Records

The odds are already in The Hunger Games' favor!

The second movie in the hit franchise — Catching Fire, opening November 22 — is sure to become a blockbuster, and industry experts say that it could obliterate box office records.

As The Wrap reports, the film is projected to make as much as $185 million in its first weekend alone.

That would give the Jennifer Lawrence film the biggest opening weekend of the year so far, topping the $174 million first-weekend draw of Iron Man 3 in May.

And that forecast puts the movie within range of the biggest opening weekend ever, a record currently held by 2012's The Avengers and its $207 million first-weekend take.

As it is, Catching Fire is primed to have the best November weekend ever, assuming it tops The Twilight Saga: New Moon and its $142 million mark.

According to Box Office Mojo, the first installment, 2012's The Hunger Games, has the best-ever spring opening weekend ($152 million), and its total domestic gross ($408 million) is well above that of any of the Twilight or Harry Potter movies.

The first movie is also the highest-earning movie featuring an action heroine, set in a post-apocalyptic world, and based on a sci-fi or young adult book.

Looks like these movies are just as victorious as its heroines!
