The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Is the Highest-Grossing Movie in U.S. For 2013

It would have been ironic if a film named Catching Fire didn't ignite box office success, but — by the power of J.Law — the second Hunger Games movie is a huge hit, the biggest movie of the year!

Even though it came out seven weeks ago, the movie is still earning money. Lionsgate has announced that its $493,000 earning from the day of January 9 alone brought the total domestic draw to $409.4 million — as Variety reports — meaning that Catching Fire now America's highest grossing 2013 movie, having surpassed Iron Man 3 and its $409-million domestic haul.

That's not the only record the action flick has broken — it also enjoyed the biggest Thanksgiving weekend and the biggest November weekend ever!

It also grossed more than any Harry Potter or Twilight movie.

And all of those stats don't even include the international box office, which doubles the gross to a total of $832.8 million.

We can only speculate that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 will be an even bigger deal when it hits theaters this November — and that movie might even be trumped by Mockingjay - Part 2 in November 2015!

Congrats to Jennifer, Josh, Liam, Woody, Elizabeth, Francis and the rest of the Catching Fire team! You now have our permission to laugh your way to the bank.
