Captain Obvious, reporting for duty: the numbers are in, and Catching Fire took home the top prize at the box office this weekend, making an estimated $161.1 million in its first weekend in theaters!
While we’re not surprised at all that the second Hunger Games installment came in first, we are seriously impressed. The first movie pulled in $152.5 million, which means Catching Fire is leaving it in the dust.
And we’re even more blown away by the fact that, according to Entertainment Weekly, only three other movies have beat Catching Fire’s opening weekend in history — The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, all of which are pretty stiff competition.
And remember, these numbers just include the United States. When tallying globally, the movie has brought in $307.7 worldwide so far. Not too shabby, especially in comparison to the first movie’s total of $211.8. That’s a lot of Panem converts in the past year!
More interesting demographics? 61% of the people who saw Catching Fire this weekend were female, and there was an even split between the audience in moviegoers ages 25 and up and under 25.
This totally confirms what we’ve known all along — no matter how old or young you are, you still want to be just like Jennifer Lawrence.
