Cate Blanchett Dedicates Her BAFTA Award to Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman may be gone, but he was very much present in spirit at the 2014 BAFTA awards — especially where Cate Blanchett was concerned.

When Cate was awarded Best Actress at Sunday’s awards, instead of thanking friends and family, she took the opportunity to honor her fallen friend in her acceptance speech and dedicated the award to him.

“I would like to dedicate this to an actor who has been a continual, profound touchstone for me, a monumental presence who is now so sadly in absence: The late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman,” Cate said, according to Us Weekly. “Phil, your monumental talent, your unflinching quest for truth both in art and in life will be missed by so many people. You raised the bar continually. Phil, buddy, this is for you, you bastard. Hope you’re proud.”

Earlier this month, Cate was among the attendees at Philip’s wake, alongside Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

“I don’t think I’m alone in the room having been profoundly influenced by Phil and his body of work, but also by who he was as a person,” Cate said after the awards in the press room. “He was the most extraordinary friend to so many people.”

“Time will tell just how deep [his influence] was,” the Blue Jasmine actress added. “If I could be half the actor he was in his unfortunately short life, I’ll be very happy.”
