Da Brat may have already served time for her 2007 nightclub assault on an ex-NFL cheerleader, but she’s not done paying for her crime just yet. The rapper, who spent more than three years in jail for aggravated assault, now owes a whopping $6.4 million in damages to the woman she bottled almost seven years ago.
The Grammy-nominated artist — real name: Shawntae Harris — violently bottled former Atlanta Falcons cheerleader Shayla Stevens at an Atlanta nightclub in 2007, after which she plead guilty to aggravated assault and was sent to prison.
While she was still locked up, Da Brat was sued by Shayla for causing permanent physical and mental injuries, including facial scarring, neurological impairment, and severe mental pain. And while the lawsuit began back in 2009, the jury just reached a verdict on February 27.
First, the jury awarded Shayla $3.7 million for her injuries and loss of past and future earnings. In addition, Da Brat will be required pony up an extra $2.7 million for added punishment, bringing her total owings to $6.4 million.
We’re glad to hear that this terrible incident seems to be finally put to bed, though we can’t imagine the pain experienced both by the victim and the rapper herself. This will hopefully teach people that getting into a club brawl — or really turning to violence at all — is never the way to go. One also hopes that Da Brat’s close friend Mariah Carey can support her during this time.
