UPDATE (September 12, 2014): E! Online reports that Indio Downey Jr. appeared in a Los Angeles court for his arraignment today — with dad Robert Downey Jr. seated behind him. He pled guilty to one count of felony possession of cocaine and must now complete a total of 18 months in a drug diversion program. (He has already completed two.) If he does so, the conviction will be dismissed. The other count, of possession of a smoking device, was dismissed.
UPDATE (August 8, 2014): According to TMZ, Indo has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. TMZ's sources added that, as a first-time (alleged) offender, Indio is automatically entitled to a drug diversion program. Robert Downey Jr.'s 20-year-old son voluntarily checked himself into rehab after he was arrested for cocaine possession on June 29, and an insider told People that RDJ understands the struggle and plans to be right there for his son.
UPDATE (1:34 p.m. PST on June 30, 2014):
Robert has spoken out about his son's arrest. Telling E! Online in a statement, "unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it" the actor added "there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being. We're grateful to the Sheriff's department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."
We're rooting for you guys!
Original story (7:02 a.m. PST on June 30, 2014):
Like father, like son? Not in the way we hoped! On June 29, Robert Downey, Jr.’s son, Indio Downey, was arrested for possession of cocaine — years after his father struggled with a similar battle with drugs.
According to People, the 20-year-old was at a traffic stop when he was arrested by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department in West Hollywood after police saw him smoking from a pipe. Indio was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Not a good night for Indio!
He’s not still locked up, though — LAPD Sgt. Aballo says he’s already been released on a $10,000 bail, thanks to his mother, Deborah Falconer.
In October 2013, it was reported that Indio was struggling with a drug addiction, particularly when it comes to prescription medication. His mother claimed to be treating his problem with a “holistic, natural” approach, and Robert was allegedly (and unsurprisingly) distraught about his son’s issues with drugs.
“This is a nightmare for Robert because his boy has never been in trouble before,” a source said at the time. “He’s praying for Indio’s recovery.”
If Indio is struggling with an addiction, we hope he gets the health he needs and has a speedy recovery.
