UPDATE: Independence Day is not starting well for Russell Neal, who has now been charged with murdering his wife. TMZ said he is currently in custody on $100,000 bond.

Law enforcement told TMZ that Catherine Martinez, a 24-year-old fitness model and aspiring boxer, died from blunt force trauma and stab wounds. Catherine and Russell have two children, but (thankfully) they were reportedly not in the apartment at the time that their mother died, since sources said there were no witnesses. Still, what a tragedy. The kids lost their mother and their father has just been charged with killing her.

Remember the '90s R&B group Hi-Five? Well, expect to see them a lot in headlines this weekend; one of the quintet’s singers, Russell Neal, has been arrested after his wife was found dead inside their apartment, according to a report from TMZ.

Russell allegedly told police about the death and said he needed a lawyer. TMZ adds Russell went to the local jail in Houston where he told cops he and his wife had argued on July 2. He didn’t comment on the matter any further, instead requesting legal counsel.

Hi-Five, for those who don’t remember, rocketed to the top of the music charts in 1991 with their hit No. 1 song “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)” (jog your memory by watching the video below).

A year later, Hi-Five scored again with single “She’s Playing Hard to Get”. Based out of Waco, Texas, the group consisted of Russell, Roderick “Pooh” Clark, Marcus Sanders, Toriano Easley (later replaced by Treston Irby), and lead vocalist Tony Thompson. Tony passed away in 2007 at age 31 after accidentally inhaling Freon from his apartment building’s air conditioning unit.

Charges have yet to be filed; Russell is still detained, says TMZ. His lawyer, named Chris Brown (yes, really), tells the outlet, “We are aware of the situation and are presently evaluating it.”
