We may have been totally heartbroken when Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, announced their separation Tuesday, but according to sources close to the couple, they’re taking their split a lot better than we are.

Their split, the source insists, isn’t an ending for the couple, who was married for ten years — it’s a chance for both of them to have a new beginning.

“It’s not a sad thing,” a friend of Gwyneth and Chris told E! Online. “They’re two grown-ups. They’re best friends. Most important are the kids and they will continue to co-parent. They’re in a great place. They tried, but know this is a better way for them to be. They still love each other, but they realize it’s best not to be a couple anymore.”

But they didn’t come to that realization right away. Gwyneth and Chris put some serious effort into making their marriage work, even though they eventually came to realize that it was a lost cause.

“They both really believed in the sanctity of marriage and the role model it provided for their kids,” another friend added. “Both of their parents were married their entire lives, and they really wanted the same for their kids. They stuck it out for a long time.”

Totally valid. Sometimes, it’s way better for kids to have two happy, divorced parents than unhappy ones who stay together. And we seriously doubt this is a decision that Gwyneth and Chris would take lightly.

“They grew apart,” a third friend said. “They fell out of love. The one thing that kept them together was the kids. The kids mean the world to them. The love was lost. They realized that they were more friends and not lovers and they were at different stages in their careers.”

Here’s to the friendship Gwyneth and Chris are now embarking on in place of their marriage. We wish them both the best — even if it will take us a little while to get over their split.
