Sad news today out of Disney. Former Lizzie McGuire star Daniel Escobar has died of complications from diabetes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Daniel was 49 when he passed away at a Los Angeles hospital last week.

Daniel starred as ace teacher Mr. Escobar on the hit Disney Channel show alongside leading lady Hilary Duff. He appeared on the show from 2001 to 2002. He also had recurring roles on the likes of TV standouts Weeds, Malcolm in the Middle, Desperate Housewives, Two and a Half Men, and How I Met Your Mother where he once again portrayed a teacher as Professor Rodriguez.

When not appearing on the small screen, Daniel appeared in major films including The Lizzie McGuire Movie, Blow, and The Mexican starring Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt.

The actor trained as a Shakespearean performer and won the prestigious 2008 Helen Hayes Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in stage work She Stoops to Comedy.

He died last Friday (December 13), according to the THR article. Daniel’s former co-star Hilary has yet to publicly comment on his passing. Her most recent tweet seems to indicate the new mom is in transit on her way home for the holidays.

Our thoughts are with Daniel’s family and friends during this difficult time.
