As could be expected, Julia Roberts will be taking a big step back from her 2014 awards season schedule to grieve the sudden, tragic loss of her half-sister, Nancy Motes. As reported yesterday, Nancy, 37, was found dead in her L.A. home on Sunday, February 9, of an apparent drug overdose. And now, her Oscar-nominated sister is canceling many of her planned appearances.

Yesterday’s Acadamy Awards’ Nominees Luncheon was the first of a number of scheduled engagements Julia is likely to cancel in the coming weeks. She was also planning to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to promote her Best Supporting Actress-nominated role in August: Osage County.

Julia, 45, and her younger half sibling — the two share a mother — had a troubled relationship. Nancy famously aired her grievances with her older sister in a New York Daily News interview last summer, claiming that Julia’s taunts about her weight had caused great harm to her psyche and even lead her to undergo gastric bypass surgery.

Nancy did hope to repair their relationship, though her tweets as recently as October 2013 revealed otherwise: "It's a shame when you get more support from strangers than you do from your family,” she wrote. “I can't wait to officially belong to another family!"

Despite their problems, it’s been a difficult time for Nancy’s family, which also includes older brother Eric Roberts and his daughter, American Horror Story star Emma Roberts. "The family is both shocked and devastated," the Roberts family said in a statement.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Monday, said Lieutenant Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner. He revealed that Nancy was found in a bathtub, with prescription and non-prescription drugs found on the scene. "We're taking it as a suicide, not a drowning," Corral said.

Our thoughts are with the Roberts family in this difficult time.
