On the list of most people's "favorite things" is the classic film and musical, The Sound of Music, all about the singing Von Trapp family. Sadly, Maria Von Trapp  the last remaining member of that family  has now passed away.

Maria died in her sleep at her home in Vermont on February 18 at the age of 99, according to the Austrian Times. Maria was the second-eldest daughter in her family and was the last of the seven brothers and sisters from the singing family to pass away.

"Maria had a wonderful life and, while we will miss her, the memories of her will live on," her half-brother, Johannes von Trapp, says.

"It was a surprise that she was the one in the family to live the longest because, ever since she was a child, she suffered from a weak heart," says a family friend. "It was the fact that she suffered from this that her father decided to hire [an aspiring nun named] Maria to teach her and her brothers and sisters. That, of course, then led to one of the most remarkable musical partnerships of the last century."

The lasting popularity of The Sound of Music was proved when Carrie Underwood starred in a live NBC production of the musical last year, earning huge ratings. The 1965 film version, starring Julie Andrews, won five Oscars, including Best Picture.

We wish all the best to Maria's loved ones. And we suddenly have an urge to watch the film yet again.
