Today marks a sad day in Hollywood.
The cause of death in the case of Oscar-winning director Malik Bendjelloul has been released by his brother, Johar Bendjelloul. “I can confirm that it was suicide and that he had been depressed for a short period of time,” Johar told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet (via Daily Mail). “Life is not always easy...It’s the worst. I don’t know how to handle it.”
The 36-year-old child actor-turned-director was found dead in Stockholm on Tuesday and the police didn’t initially confirm where he was found and cause of death was still unknown.
Malik’s documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, was awarded an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2013 — though his list of awards and accolades doesn’t end there! He also snagged a BAFTA, a Director’s Guild of America Award, Producer’s Guild of America Award, Writer’s Guild of America Award, and the Sundance Audience Award. Malik clearly leaves behind a huge legacy.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Malik’s family during this difficult time. It’s never easy to lose a loved one especially under these tragic circumstances.
