On February 2, the world reeled from the news that actor Philip Seymour Hoffman had been found dead in his Manhattan apartment. ABC News later reported that five empty and 65 unused bags of heroin were discovered at the scene, though Philip’s cause of death has not been officially confirmed.
The 46-year-old’s body was found by his friend, screenwriter David Katz, who, according to TMZ, went to Philip’s apartment after the Oscar winner didn’t pick up his children at 9 a.m. on Sunday like previously arranged.
Philip had three children with his longtime partner, Mimi O’Donnell. The two had been together for 14 years, though U.K. publication The Daily Mail says they had recently split. Their son, Cooper, is 10, and their daughters, Tallulah and Willa, are 7 and 5, respectively.
Back in April 2013, photographers caught up with Philip and Mimi as the couple walked their kids to school in New York City. In one photo, Philip is seen holding Willa’s hand as he and his daughters wait to cross the street.
In another, he leads the way as the family heads across an intersection. Willa is standing in front of her mother. Cooper and Tallulah, both red-headed and smiling brightly, are holding hands as they cross the street. Their father is carrying Willa’s backpack the entire time.
After Philip’s death, his family released a statement asking people to keep him in their thoughts and prayers. "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," they said.
