He might exactly not be new on the block, but Mark Wahlberg’s got no problem keeping up with the kids. The 42-year-old actor and producer is a recent high school grad!
You read right. The actor, producer, and musician, who is estimated to be worth upwards of $200 million, recently went back to school to round out his street-smarts heavy education with a little old-fashioned book-learning.
Mark, whose troubled childhood included drug use and multiple run-ins with the police, dropped out of school back in the ninth grade. The actor calls getting his diploma “a huge accomplishment” and says it also feels like “a huge sense of relief.”
So why did the A-list actor go back to school in the first place? For the children, naturally.
“I didn’t want the kids saying, ‘You didn’t do it, so why do I need it?’” the father of four reveals. “They are all wanting to do things in their future that require an education.”
The best part of this story: Mark did it all while maintaining a busy filming schedule. With the help of a tutor and by taking online courses, Mark got his necessary final credits while finishing the action flick Two Guns. However, co-star Denzel Washington had his suspicions about Mark’s off-camera activities.
“Denzel was always asking me what I was doing but I didn’t want to share that information with him,” Mark explains. “Nobody knew because I felt like I don’t like to count my chickens before they hatch so I didn’t want to say that I was doing it until I actually finished it.”
Now that he’s got his sheepskin in hand, though, Mark’s aiming even higher. “I would love to go to [the University of Southern California] and study film,” he said. “I don’t want to become a veterinarian or anything; [I want to study] things that further my career and broaden my horizon.”
More power to you, Marky Mark! We’d send you a graduation present but what do you get the man who has $200 million?
